Translation Sciences-Traductology and Cognitive Sciences (TRASCO)

Objectives

The objectives of this joint Master Program are:

  • Introduction into specialized knowledge in the fields of translation didactics and translation procedure by means of a interdisciplinary appro

  • The study of cognitive functions in understanding and producing sense during the translation process.

  • The exploitation of computational linguistics tools, of corpora linguistics and of translation with the aid of a computer for the benefit of translation didactics and process.

  • Research aiming at processing new pedagogic methods applied to translation, which are based on new interdisciplinary knowledge, with the objective to train translators and make them more efficient in productivity and reliability.

Application Prerequisites

This Master Program addresses to graduates of all departments and from all countries. Any graduate who possesses at least one university degree of  four-year duration studies, or has 240 ECTS, independently of specialization, and can write and speak at least two foreign languages, one of which must be perfect French, and the second one preferably English, can apply for candidature. Applicants are admitted on the basis of their CV, interview or written examination. As the Program is open to candidates who have not attended foreign language courses before, the interview or the written examination aim at certifying the candidate's foreign language proficiency as well as his/her general education. Examination boards meet in Caen and in Corfu.

Study Program Syllabus

The study program extends over two academic semesters and has the form of lectures, seminars, e-learning with the use of new technology and the writing of a dissertation. The language used is French.

The first semester modules, which take place in Caen and correspond to 15 ECTS or 6 Teaching Units in total, are:

  • Cognitive Psychology

  • Traductology

  • Introduction to research: documentation and methodology

  • Computational language processing

  • One of the modules offered in the "Ecole Doctorale"

  • Introduction to Modern Greek for the non-Greek speaking students

  • Advanced French for Greek students

The first semester modules, which take place in Corfu and correspond to 15 ECTS or 6 Teaching Units in total, are:

  • Translation Didactics

  • Methodology of specialized translation

  • Terminology and Translation

  • Semantics

  • One of the modules offered in the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting

  • Introduction to Modern Greek for the non-Greek speaking students

  • Advanced French for Greek students

Each seminar is followed by knowledge assessment. Every module corresponds to (1) didactic unit or (2,5) ECTS. 50% of the final grade comes from the totality of seminars. The dissertation, which corresponds to 30 ECTS or 12 didactic units, is written either in Greek with a summary in French, or in French with a summary in Greek and is presented to a joint Greek-French examination Board.

Accredited Degrees

The degree awarded, written in both the Greek and French language is jointly awarded by both cooperating Institutions, the names of which appear on the degree certificate. Graduates of the Program have the right to apply for a Ph.D. either in Greece or in France under co-supervision, provided they fulfil all expectations applied to each country law.

Study bursaries

Students can cover part of their expenses with bursaries offered by the E.U. (Erasmus), Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie AUF, IKY, etc.
