Teaching Methodology of Multilingualism

Objectives

This joint Master Program aims at providing future graduates with specialization in practice and theory which they employ in:

  • effectuation of programs for the promotion of multilingualism and interculturalism

  • planning and implementation of language education policies in the countries of south-eastern Europe as well as in any other multilingual environment

The program pertains to the sensitisation of students with respect to the principles and objectives of a specific language education in accordance with the contemporary methods, which admit the special role of the student's mother tongue, a positive evaluation of it, its particularities, as well as the corresponding culture each language carries which is, at the same time, a constituent of it.

Students are invited to study in depth the principles and means of a multiple innovative approach to languages and cultures called "Language Diversity Arousal" which aims at:

  • The development of representations and attitudes of interest in all languages, aiming at stimulating the student's interest in languages and more specifically in the language his/her family circle speak when it is considered a disadvantage.

  • The development of meta-linguistic and meta-communicative skills (observation and thinking), which facilitate the access to the school language and to foreign language learning.

  • The acquisition of a linguistic culture that a better understanding of the modern multilingual and multicultural world.

Study Program Syllabus

Students attend the same syllabus in both institutions according to the existing Study Syllabus. Courses take place in both institutions, one semester in each country, and a three month period is required for the dissertation writing. Students take 10 modules, and, if necessary a foreign language one. The teaching language is primarily French and secondarily Greek. Therefore, students must have a good knowledge of the French language. There is also practical experience of at least 250 hours. Students have to cover their own fares and accommodation expenses in the other country, with the possibility of getting a bursary.

Accommodation

The receiving institution helps students in every possible way so as to find a room in its campus. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki commits itself with providing students of the University of Maine, who attend the first semester courses in Thessaloniki, with free access to the university restaurant. Greek students, who will attend courses in the University of Maine, in the second semester, are allowed to use the university restaurant by paying the student tariff.
